Your Customers ALWAYS Have A Choice

Only fools believe their business has no competition.

There are multiple ways to think about who your competition is, however, I’m going to define it in the simplest terms for businesses and that is customer money.

If I have a need and you could supply that need for a price, but I choose to satisfy that need by spending my money with someone else, that someone else is your competition.

This weeks Sound ADvice newsletter talks about competition and  I’ll share that with you in a second but first I want to broaden your idea of competition.

Today, I ate breakfast.

I had the choice of eating something I already spent money on and was in my kitchen…

Or I could leave my house and spend money somewhere else.

Often, business owners only look at their direct competition.  Today I spent a couple of bucks for a breakfast burrito and a diet Mt. Dew. Yesterday I spent 6 times that for a breakfast sandwich and white mocha from my favorite coffee shop. Tomorrow, I’ll have a bowl of cereal.

See, sometimes the competition isn’t direct, but an alternative, however they all are ways that involve my money and my desire for breakfast.

Now let’s look at the SoundADvice I’m sending out in my weekly newsletter this week. (and if you want a free copy emailed to you every week, just let me know).

Have you ever heard someone say, “We don’t worry about our competitors, we just focus on what we do”?

Sure you have! It sounds nice, but the truth is that most successful business owners have a very keen eye on their competitors and know as much about them as possible. If not, there is no way to know which cards you can or should play or when to play them.

More than likely you know “who” your competitors are, but “how much” do you know about them? It’s not so much about knowing them so you can be like them, but, the more you know them, the more you can make sure you differentiate your business from theirs.

Motivational and self-help speaker Jim Rohn was known for his witty one-liners. One of his best was directed at people and businesses and it encouraged them to be different.

“Walk away from the 97%. Don’t talk like they talk,
don’t act like they act,
don’t go where they go, don’t do what they do,
don’t specialize in what they specialize in”.

In other words, Jim is saying, be yourself, make your own mark. Make sure you and your business are clearly different than your competitors.

Why is it so important to know your competitors?

In any given market, large, medium, or small, there is only so much business. Capturing your fair share and growing your share is the path to success. Only when you know what their strengths and weaknesses are can we know how you can best position your business to compete with them and grow your share of the market.

When we are armed with this knowledge, we can communicate our true value to consumers, adapt our brand and communications strategy accordingly, and win market share.

Identifying what differentiates your brand, product, or service from other players in the industry is only one of the benefits of analyzing your competitors. It’s crucial to increasing sales with your current customers, building customer loyalty, and attracting new customers. It will also help you identify the following:

  • Understanding industry standards so that you can meet and exceed them.
  • Discovering untapped niche markets.
  • Fulfilling customers’ desires and solving their problems better than competitors.
  • Distinguishing your brand.
  • Standing out in your marketing.

In today’s multifaceted world, competitions come in many forms. Direct competitors are easy to identify. Indirect competitors are sometimes harder to uncover and can come from anywhere. Grocery stores had no idea they would be competing against Amazon. Tire stores and hearing centers didn’t imagine they would be competing with Costco and Sam’s.

While the process of evaluating and knowing your competition can be taxing, the benefits of knowing can open an array of opportunities for your business.

What kind of disconnect in your business model do you need to fix this year?

4 years ago with the Covid-19 Pandemic shutdowns, there was a whole heck of a lot of disruptions as we were exploring the great unknown about a virus that we were told could wipe out a significant percent of our population.

Earlier this month I was at a conference and was reminded of some facts that I’d forgotten from history that occured around a hundred years ago.  Between the Spanish flu and World War One, we lost 10% of our population or more depending on the geographic parameters you look at.  In 2020, our governments and those around the world were looking to prevent a similar catastrophe and as a result we had a combination of business and supply chain shut downs along with increased adoption of emerging tech.

For example, the work from home business model that some companies used on a limited basis soon became mainstream with a lot of organizations.  Video meetings and platforms like Microsoft Teams and Zoom existed before 2020, but now everyone knows about them.

The use of apps to order food exploded and the adoption of many businesses to still provide products and services with less people pushed emerging tech to faster adoption than if we had not had the Covid Crisis.

I’m not talking about politics, I’m referring to reality which we can see with hindsight.

With the aging of the biggest population demographic, the Baby Boomers, and their retirement rates effectively reducing the working population before the pandemic (10,000 are turning 65 every day) we already had a growing labor shortage in many fields such as trucking and healthcare.  The Covid Crisis, while not as bad as 100 years ago, percentage wise, impacted us in this manner too.

Organization improvement by necessity is what kept most of the pre-pandemic businesses alive today while others never recovered.

There’s still more to do.

MarketingCharts.com released a study of Business to Business priorities that are equally important in the Business to Consumer world too.

The top priority for B2B go-to-market (GTM) teams in the year ahead is to strengthen marketing, sales, and customer success alignment according to the report.

I’ve seen this too many times in businesses and non-profits that there are too many silos.  Or to use a term my parents used, “the left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing.”

When I’m working with business owners and we launch an ad campaign, too many don’t tell or share with their teams what we are doing except for some very vague mention like, “we’re going to run some ads to increase sales.”

What is really needed is that everyone in the organization is made aware of just what is going on to promote your business.  From the person that answers the phone, to the front line customer service and tech people, even those mostly behind the scenes need to know what you are doing, what the details are, and why.  When you invest in promoting your business, make sure you have everyone in your organization, “in-the-know.”

When you do this, then most of the other priorities on this list can happen.  That includes:

  • Enhance Customer Experience and Engagement
  • Increase Brand Awareness
  • Increase Internal Process Efficiency

Which can set the stage for the last three on the list pertaining to growth and expansion.

As a business owner, or manager or even someone without a title, every once in awhile we should stop and plan for the future.  Problem is many people do it alone, or with limited input.

Before you owned or were managing a business, you may have been on the other side as an employee, and you probably had a lot of ideas on how you could improve your employers’ businesses.

There’s an old saying, “None of us is as smart as all of us”, or, “Both of us are smarter than one of us.” 

Guess what, like you, your staff just may have some ideas on how to improve your business. They’re in the trenches facing customer complaints and questions every day and oftentimes may have thoughts on how and what it would take to create happier customers.

There are several ways you can benefit from inviting more staff input on how to grow your business:

1.) Odds are some of your staff are from a younger generation than you and may be better at coming up with ideas that appeal to their generation.

2.) People whose opinions are solicited and respected are likely to respond positively and be better employees.

3.) When you act upon a suggestion made by your employees, they have a moral obligation to see that initiative through to success.

As the new year is approaching, now is a wonderful time to set in motion ways to improve your business in 2024.  Start by including your trusted employees in a brainstorming session.

What does it take to be a leader?

That question was asked of myself and a couple dozen others this summer at a half day retreat our company held in August.

The answers were plentiful and good, as most of us were in a leadership position.  Some of us had a leadership title with people that reported to them, while others were leaders due to the work they did or how they performed.

One topic on the subject of leadership was sent out to subscribers to my Sound ADvice newsletter and it goes like this:

Are you a boss, or are you a manager?

When you approach the definition of the word boss or manager as a noun, they basically mean the same thing. However, when approached as a verb, they have drastically different meanings.

 

As a verb, Webster’s dictionary defines “boss” this way, “to order about in a domineering way”.  A “manager” is defined as, “to handle or direct with a degree of skill”. It even adds in, “to treat with care”.

Poor customer service is often the result of interaction with people working for a boss who is not happy with their situation. Strong, professional, and polite customer service comes from employees working for and with someone who is a manager.

The most successful managers today hire people who have a passion to do their jobs to the best of their ability…these people don’t need a boss. These people need a manager who will give them access to the tools, training, people, resources, and environment that allows them to perform to the best of their ability.

So, if you’re a manager, here’s an idea. Instead of giving your people a “to-do” list, try asking them to give you a “to-do” list. What do they need you to do to help them be more productive or deliver better customer service?

In our Twelve Ways to Create Happy Employees, number seven is “360-degree feedback”…asking your employees how YOU are doing.

 

Zig Ziglar said, “You can get whatever you want as long as you are willing to help others get what they want.”  It’s also been said that “You can be as successful as you want if you are willing to let others take the credit.” 

If you look honestly into a mirror and ask yourself, “Am I a boss or a manager?“, what would you answer?

If you’re a boss, are you ready to quit being the boss and become the facilitator or manager of your team’s success? A culture where the “boss” works for the staff and the staff works for the customer can create a successful company without anyone working for the company!

Happy employees will deliver happy customers.

Now again I am back to my first love of marketing consulting and advertising sales.  During those management years, I learned how challenging it is to be a boss, a manager, a leader with the title and consistently do a good job for your team and your bosses.

It’s Not Just The Facts Ma’am

First a few facts…

We’ve gone thru a challenging number of years in the political world as divisions between Republicans and Democrats have become more prominent, at least at the national level in our country.

Those on the left accuse those on the right of not telling the truth and those on the political right accuse those on the left of not telling the truth.

Both sides accuse the news organizations they don’t like as Fake News.

As someone who knows how media works and who observes all of this on radio, TV and online, I can not only see the biases, but I also understand the why’s behind them.

But I’m not going to go all political on you right now, I’m just going to use that as an example of Facts versus Emotion.

We may think we operate and make decisions based on logical facts but most of us are actually ruled by emotion and then we find the facts to support what we believe.

There’s another part of this that relates to how customers decide what to buy that subscribers to my Sound ADvice newsletter read about recently and I’ll share it right now.

Some consumers make purchase decisions based on relationships and some make them purely on price. They are referred to as either relational or transactional customers.

If your business sells on price alone, this information may not pertain as much to you. If you would like to sell more on relationships, pay close attention and heed this information.

Chris Lytle, author of The Accidental Salesperson, says “If you become known for what you know instead of what you sell, buyers will come to you for help and advice instead of the lowest price.” The good news is that they will pay you more for your knowledge than they will for just the product!

Chris goes on to explain “To become known for what you know, you have to actively market your knowledge instead of your product.”

A group of hugely successful auto parts stores created a strong market position in the DIY category by promoting and exploiting the knowledge of their employees. They had employees who loved Ford and others who knew Chevy, Chrysler, or Dodge inside and out. Even some who were more specifically knowledgeable about the older “muscle cars”. This knowledge took the focus off the price and put it squarely on the fact that they had people with the knowledge, and they had the parts!

As they say, knowledge is power, and the more knowledge you are perceived to have, the more people will look at you and your company as the “experts”.

In the 10 Ways to Market Your Knowledge, the author suggests, “Have an FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) page on your website. Monitor the questions your customers are asking and publish your answers clearly in layman’s terms. Allow your prospects and customers to ask questions online, and always be prompt in posting your answers. Most importantly, take credit for your answers and make sure the public recognizes that the answers came from you.”

A few more thoughts on Relational versus Transactional customers:
Transactional will usually only be loyal to you as long as you are the lowest price.  That’s a losing game because there is always someone else that can underprice you, even if they do it as a loss just to gain that customer.  It’s called a loss-leader.
Relationship based customers are going to be less sensitive to increases in price.  Just the other day when I was stopping to pick up my breakfast, I heard them tell a customer that the prices had gone up 20% and they said that’s fine and paid the new price.  Relationship based customers are also more forgiving when there is a problem and you explain to them the situation.
I urge all of my business owner friends to pursue the Relationship based customers, they’re the ones that will keep you growing in business.
