Do You Need A Spring Break?

For college kids, Spring Break was last month.  But for most of the K-12 schools in the Fort Wayne area, spring break is the first full week of April.

In this world of  24/7 connectivity, do you need to take a break for awhile?  Especially if you are on vacation, can you take a break from work and all your connected devices?

I know it can be hard.  Last month, my wife and I took a couple days off and left town for our anniversary.  Not once during that trip did I pop open my laptop to do work.

I did spend about 4 minutes one of those days replying to a couple emails on my phone, so I wasn’t completely shut down from work.  But one of those emails was simply, “I am out of town and can we talk on Monday…”

Enjoy your spring break.  You need it and you deserve it too.  This is no April Fool’s Joke.

St. Pat’s Anniversary

Last Friday I mentioned that it was my wife’s birthday.  Today it is not only St Patrick’s day but also our 14th wedding anniversary.

My Irish Bride

My Irish Bride

Because both of her parents are of Irish heritage, Oops, I was wrong. Only her Mom was of Irish descent,  St. Patrick’s day was a big event.  And Kathy wanted to have a pleasant memory associated with the day so that one day, when both of her parents had passed away she could reflect on something positive.  And that is why we have a  St. Pat’s day anniversary.

It’s Mrs ScLoHo’s Birthday

When I first met Kathy, both of us had been dating others.  Each of us were divorced, raising kids, helping with other family members and also ready to start the next chapter of our own lives.

That was 15 years ago and a whole lot has transpired during the past decade and a half.  We traditionally take time off between her birthday and our St. Patrick’s Day anniversary and this year is no exception.   Since you won’t see her around town for a few days, here’s a couple of pictures from the past of the birthday girl I swiped from her Facebook page.

Happy Birthday, my love!

A Salute to My Uncle Carl

A Salute to My Uncle Carl

This time of year reminds me of my late Uncle Carl. This shot was taken 10 years ago when they were visiting friends during Derby weekend.

Carl was famous for his practical jokes, his sense of humor and his faith. He actually lived a couple years longer than the doctors predicted with some serious health problems. My favorite story that he told me about 11 years ago was how he became a one eyed helicopter pilot. Back in his day, to become a pilot they had to take a vision test that included reading an eye chart.

So, he took his hand and covered his eye and read the chart perfectly. However he was blind in the other eye. When the military doc told him to read the chart with his other eye, he lowered his hand and put his other hand up covering the same eye and passed the test! A few months later, he did it again and got his helicopter pilots licence!

Thanks Uncle Carl for being a part of our lives!

Today…

Would have been the birthday of two people who are no longer around.

Steve Howard. He was my cousin, older by a few years, the only son of Uncle Carl. I’m not really sure what year it was that he died, except it was too young. Traffic accident. He was back from college for Christmas break and as he was returning to the neighborhood that his parents and sister lived in his car slid off the road. They lived in Carmel Indiana at the time, about 2 hours from us. I was a teen at the time and this was the first funeral of someone that I remember going to. I could hardly stay awake, not from tiredness, but it was my way of dealing with grief.

Now the reason I know when Steve’s birthday was is due to something my Mom shared with me a few years ago: She and Steve were born on the same day (many years apart). So she would send a note, I believe to my Aunt and Uncle in remembrance of Steve on her birthday which was August 15, 1933. She stopped having birthdays on Thanksgiving 2001, but that’s another story. In the meantime, remember it is always someones birthday, send a card!
