Foursquare with a Purpose

I remember when I first started using Foursquare and was checking in at places that I was visiting.

I remember the thrill of being the mayor of a business or event.

Being the Mayor of my church was weird though.

I have started being more selective with my Foursquare check-ins and here’s why:

  1. Being a Mayor isn’t all that exciting anymore.
  2. I have competitors that are friends on Foursquare. Actually it’s the other way around.  They were friends first.  But either way, they don’t need to know what clients and potential clients I am visiting.
  3. The flip side is that I will continue to monitor Foursquare check-ins when I am interested in seeing what my friends are up to and perhaps meet up for a bite or conversation.

I have always been protective of giving away too much information via Location Based Social Media Services.  I am selective as to who I friend on Foursquare and I refuse to use the check-in feature on Facebook.

What about you?

  1. I have never used FourSquare mostly becuase I dont care to let people know where I am. I continue to be shocked by people posting when they are on vacation and otherwise away from home. It screams “come rob me, I am not home”. Yes, I am paranoid and have probably watched too many Law & Order episodes. I dont think I will be jumping on the “check in” bandwagon any time soon.

    •  I understand your concerns.  That’s why I don’t use the Location Service of Facebook.

Foursqaure I have been more selective with selecting who I am friends with.  And we often have family at our home even when we are not there!
